Why the Falkland Islands?

Why the Falkland Islands?

When people ask us “Why the Falkland Islands?” we can’t help but smile. For us, the answer isn’t just about the wildlife, the landscapes, or the history (though all of those are incredible). It’s personal.

A Family Story That Starts in the Falklands

The Bound family’s connection to the Falklands goes back generations. Zak’s grandparents, Nap and Joan Bound, were born and raised here. They loved these islands so much that in 1960 they started their own tourism business, named “Outward Bound”, welcoming visitors to explore this remote, windswept corner of the South Atlantic long before tourism was what it is today.

Zak’s Connection

Zak’s dad was born here too, and spent his childhood growing up among the wild coasts, the penguin colonies, and the close-knit community that makes the Falklands so special.

It’s no surprise, then, that Zak’s love for the Falklands started young, very young. At just six months old, Zak made his first trip to the islands, and from that point on, it became a yearly tradition. Each visit deepened his connection to the land, the wildlife, and the stories passed down through his family.

Sharing the Islands with Libby

As Zak grew older, one thing became clear: he wanted to share this special place with Libby. When she finally joined him on a trip, she immediately understood why the Falklands had captured his heart. Together, they explored its rugged beauty, encountered penguins up close, and felt the quiet magic of a place that still feels truly wild.

A Tradition That Continues

With so much Bound family history in the islands — from Nap and Joan’s tours in the 1960s, to Zak and Libby’s deep connection today, it felt only natural to create Bound Tours. Our goal is to carry on that tradition: showing visitors the Falkland Islands not just as tourists, but as guests, friends, and fellow adventurers.

Why the Falklands?

Because here, you can stand on a beach surrounded by thousands of penguins, watch the sky blaze with seabirds, and feel like you’re standing at the edge of the world. But most of all, because this place is part of who we are. And we can’t wait to share it with you.
