Setting Sail for the Falkland Islands, South Georgia & Antarctica
Zak and I are incredibly fortunate to be embarking on this once in a lifetime journey to the Falkland Islands, South Georgia, and Antarctica with National Geographic Lindblad Expeditions.
Our adventure began at London Heathrow, where we boarded our flight to Buenos Aires. After a night in the city, we caught our connecting flight south to Ushuaia.
Before boarding the ship, we enjoyed a lovely tour around Ushuaia, exploring its scenic surroundings before boarding a catamaran that brought us back into port by sea.
Once aboard the ship, we completed our essential safety briefings and then had our first real chance to explore. And WOW what a ship!
Our first day at sea was spent en-route to the Falkland Islands, with the gentle roll of the waves setting the rhythm for the journey ahead.
Saunders Island – November 2nd
Our first landing was at Saunders Island, and what a day it was. In the morning, we explored around the Saunders Settlement, where we were treated to a lively demonstration of sheep shearing and an impressive display of a sheepdog rounding up the flock, a glimpse into traditional Falkland life. In the afternoon, we set off on a windy 1.5 mile walk to visit colonies of Black-browed Albatross and Rockhopper Penguins.
Keppel Island and Grave Cove – November 3rd
Next, we arrived at Keppel Island. In the morning, we enjoyed a 3.7-mile walk out to the ponds, spotting a variety of birdlife along the way. The afternoon took us to Grave Cove, home to a large and lively Gentoo Penguin colony.
Stanley – November 4th
The following day, it was announced we had a 50/50 chance of making it into Stanley, depending on the weather. When we opened our curtains that morning, there it was! Home.
It was a lovely surprise for both of us, especially as we had plenty of luggage to drop off. After a day of catching up with friends and getting organised, we rejoined the ship and continued our journey. Next stop, South Georgia.
Sea Days to South Georgia
Our two sea days were far from quiet. The first day was filled with four captivating talks, on Albatrosses, life in the Falkland Islands, a geological overview, and an inspiring talk with Mensun Bound, who spoke about Shackleton in Stanley.
The second sea day continued with talks on fat, dumpy, flightless creatures (yes, penguins!) and an introduction to South Georgia, exciting us for the adventures still to come.
