From the Falkland Islands to Scotland and Ireland
We're incredibly passionate about Sir Ernest Shackleton's remarkable story and the important role the Falkland Islands played in the Endurance expedition. So, when we had the opportunity to support the Falkland Islands Maritime Heritage Trust, we were delighted to play a small part in helping bring that story to even more people.
Helping the Journey to Scotland
Earlier this year, Zak and I had the privilege of assisting the Falkland Islands Maritime Heritage Trust by transporting the Trust's impressive 3D model of Endurance from London all the way to Discovery Point in Dundee.
The model is now on display alongside the famous RRS Discovery, creating a wonderful exhibition celebrating two of the most iconic ships in polar exploration history.
It was fantastic to know we could help ensure the model arrived safely, ready for thousands of visitors to enjoy throughout the summer.
While in Dundee, we joined renowned explorer Mensun Bound for a lecture, where he shared the extraordinary story of the Endurance22 expedition and the discovery of Shackleton's ship beneath the Weddell Sea after more than 100 years.
Before the lecture, we were fortunate to enjoy a fascinating tour of the RRS Discovery where we learned so much about the ship's remarkable history and its role in Antarctic exploration. It was an incredible experience.
Standing alongside the RRS Discovery, the Endurance model is a powerful reminder of the courage, resilience and determination. We were incredibly grateful to be invited to attend the event and are proud to support the Trust and help in any way we can to preserve and share this remarkable history for future generations.
Continuing the Journey to Ireland
The celebrations didn't stop there.
We then travelled to Dún Laoghaire, Ireland, for the Sir Ernest Shackleton Appreciation Society Conference and Gala Dinner.
Held at the beautiful Royal Marine Hotel, the event brought together historians, explorers, volunteers and Shackleton enthusiasts from around the world to celebrate Shackleton's incredible legacy.
We also visited the Shackleton Experience in Athy, learning even more about Shackleton's life, leadership and achievements while meeting people who share a passion for preserving his remarkable story.
Throughout the day we listened to a fascinating programme of talks exploring every aspect of Shackleton's legacy, from leadership lessons inspired by his expeditions to the remarkable role the Falkland Islands played in the rescue of the Endurance crew.
Highlights included hearing Mensun Bound speak about Saving His Men: Shackleton and the Falkland Islands, as well as presentations on the James Caird, Frank Hurley's photography, Percy Blackborow's extraordinary story as Shackleton's stowaway, and the enduring influence of Shackleton's leadership in both exploration and modern life.
The event offered a unique opportunity to learn from some of the world's leading polar historians and experts, while meeting others who share the same passion for preserving and celebrating Shackleton's remarkable story.
Attending both the Sir Ernest Shackleton Appreciation Society Conference in Ireland and transporting the Trust's impressive 3D model of Endurance to Dundee has given us an even greater appreciation for the lasting impact of Shackleton's story. It has been inspiring to see how people from all over the world continue to come together to celebrate his achievements, honour the courage of the Endurance crew and support the preservation of this remarkable chapter in polar history.
